Zebra birthday cakes are very common nowadays especially for girls’ birthday. They are commonly decorated in pink with various designs and patterns in strips of zebra. This kind of cake is not difficult to make but it does require some prior preparation and skills.
Animal print is a basic design element that is perfect for several different types of cakes, whether you are making a cake for a children’s zoo party or a stylish woman’s birthday. Zebra print consists of a white background with jagged-looking black stripes. Use fondant and a couple of tools to make your own zebra stripes and apply them to your cake. You don’t have to be an experienced baker to make your own zebra-print cake.
Create the wavy black and white layers of a zebra cake by alternately spooning vanilla and chocolate cake batter into a greased cake pan. Place the first spoonful of batter into the centre of the pan and allow it to spread. Add a spoonful of the second batter on top of the other flavour. Continue to alternate batters. Cut zebra stripes out of your black fondant using a scalpel. The stripes should be of varying lengths and thicknesses. All of the stripes should come to a point on the ends, but should be thicker in the centres. Don’t worry about creating uniform zebra stripes, as all of the stripes should be different.
Ice a yellow cake with alternating stripes of chocolate and vanilla frosting. Create a pattern with the stripes or allow the stripes to vary in width and waviness. Give an iced zebra cake a feminine streak by using pink icing instead of white. Cover the cake in zebra patterns by alternating wide, wavy stripes of pink icing with black. Bake a pink and black zebra cake for a baby shower for a girl or a bridesmaid’s luncheon. You may use the picture of a zebra to give you an idea of what the stripes should look like. Carefully smooth the black icing on top of the white, keeping the edges as clean as possible. Vary the lines in thickness and direction for more authenticity.
You can also extend the safari theme of a zebra cake by incorporating small plastic animals into the dessert presentation. Ice the cake with black and white stripes and add green blossoms of icing to represent bushes and trees. Plant the plastic zebras and other safari animals on the top of the cake.
