Design Your Own Birthday Cake

There are many different ways and methods which you can follow to design your own birthday cake. Before you actually delve into designing the cake, first, you will have to think of a design, theme or pattern for the cake. After that, you can prepare the materials and ingredients and start making the cake. You may also create a birthday fondant cake which is easy to make by following some simple steps.

Birthdays are a great time to celebrate! A birthday cake is an important part of any party and should match the party theme. It should also reflect the taste of the birthday boy or girl. Instead of going to your local bakery or grocery store to get a cake, why not make your own and add personalized designs. This will make your cake a hit at any party, and the birthday person will love the thoughtful designs you add. A personalized, self-designed cake is a great way to give your celebration a fun twist.

In designing your own cake, first, you may need to think of the theme of the party and who the cake is for. The way you design your cake will depend on the theme of the party. A nicely designed cake enhances the party’s theme and overall appearance. Make the cake’s design something the birthday recipient will love.

If the cake needs to be cut in a special shape, now is the time before any icing is added. Use a spatula to cover the top and sides of the cake with icing. Choose the kind of icing the birthday person likes and make sure it complements the cake flavor. Take the icing you will be using for the message and put it in a sandwich bag if it is not prepackaged, ready to use with a tip. Cut the bottom corner off one side of the sandwich bag and you have now made your own icing tip. Slowly and carefully write whatever you want to add. Practice on a paper plate first to ensure you have got the hang of writing with icing.

Create borders and decorations around the sides of the cake. Again use sandwich bags if you have not bought prepackaged, tipped icing. Add swirls, or any other fun design you can think of. Any little detail adds to the overall appearance of the cake. Include details that will enhance the theme of the cake and the party. For instance, if it is a beach themed party, you might add a sun, a beach ball, and a sailboat.

Another option you can try is perhaps making a fondant birthday cake. Fondant is an icing-like substance used to decorate or sculpt pastries. There are several types (a couple of times I made fondant by melting marshmallows) but the one I will show you here turned out to be the best for sculpting and covering cakes. I am personally not fond of fondant and when I eat a cake covered with it, I discretely remove it and eat the rest of the cake. However, certain types of cakes require sculpting and covering up with fondant, most often wedding, birthday or other celebration cakes. Of course you can decorate these cakes with icing, chocolate etc. but sometimes people ask specifically for a certain shape of cake, figurines on top of it and so forth.

Decorating a child’s molded birthday cake is a tedious job. It will take some patience, but your efforts will be well worth it. You will only get better and better as you make more cakes. So head out and get your supplies, practice a little, and you’ll be on your way to making your child’s next birthday cake a very special creation.
